History
First observed in 1953, International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12th May every year which is also the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. It all started when an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare named Dorothy Sutherland asked the then President Dwight D. Eisenhower to announce a “Nurses Day” in order to acknowledge the efforts of the entire nursing fraternity. At first, President Eisenhower rejected the proposal but later on The International Council of Nurses celebrated the day on May 12th, 1965.
It was January 1974 when the day was made official and came to be known as International Nurses Day.
