Feeding Tubes and Bags

A feeding tube is a device that’s inserted into the stomach through the abdomen to supply nutrition to a patient who cannot ingest food on his or her own. This procedure is known as percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) or G-tube insertion. During the procedure, an endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the stomach. Through the camera on the endoscope, the operating doctor is able to determine the site for insertion of the feeding tube. A feeding bag is used for the gastro-intestinal feeding in adult, paediatric or neonatal patients. An enteral formula may be administered intermittently or continuously, according to the doctor’s order. For continuous feeding, the feeding bag and tubing is hung on an IV pole. The distal end of the tubing is connected to the proximal end of the feeding tube.

Types of Feeding Tubes and Bags

  1. Ryle’s tubing or nasogastric (NG) intubation tube
This tube is placed through the nose into the patient’s stomach for the purpose of feeding him or her food and medicine. This method of feeding is generally used when a patient is suffering neck or facial injuries; has recently undergone a neck or facial surgery; needs a mechanical ventilator to breathe; has an intestinal obstruction; or if patient is comatose. The Ryle’s feeding tube is also used for the treatment of prematurely born babies.
  1. Nasoduodenal Feeding Tube
These tubes enter through the nose and extend into the beginning of the small intestine. These are usually required when feeding is for a short span of time like 1-6 months.
  1. Nasojejunal Feeding Tube
These tubes enter further into the small intestine in the jejunum region.
  1. Gastrostomy Tube
These tubes are placed directly into the stomach through the skin.
